Japan has world’s most powerful passport in 2023; India ranks 85th: Henley Passport Index

  • Japan has retained its position as the most powerful passport in the world, for the fifth consecutive year, according to the latest Henley Passport Index for the year 2023.
  • Japan allows visa-free entry to 193 global destinations.
  • Singapore and South Korea shares a joint second spot on the ranking. This is followed by Germany and Spain.
  • Afghanistan has once again the weakest passport, ranked at 109th spot, with access to just 27 destinations. Countries that allow visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 40 or fewer countries comes under weak passport category.
  • India has been ranked at 85th spot among 109 countries. The Indian passport gives visa-free entry to 59 destinations worldwide. In 2022, India was at 83rd position.

    • The Henley Passport Index, is published by London-based immigration consultancy Henley & Partners.
    • The index ranks the passports of countries according to the number of destinations their holders can visit without a prior visa.
    • The rankings are based on the analysis of data provided by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to rank 199 passports’ access to 227 travel destinations.
