Mumbai most expensive Indian city while Hong Kong tops globally in Mercer’s Cost of Living Survey 2022
- Hong Kong has been ranked as the world’s most expensive city for employees sent abroad to work, as per Mercer’s 2022 Cost of Living index.
- The 2022 ranking has ranked 227 cities. It is the 28th edition of the annual index.
- Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Bern are top five most expensive cities for international employees in the Mercer’s Cost of Living Survey 2022 respectively.
- Ankara (Turkey) is the cheapest places for foreign employees to live as per the report. It is ranked at 227th place.
Indian Cities
- Among Indian cities, Mumbai is the most expensive city for foreign employees. It is ranked at 127th place.
- Other most expensive Indian city in the list are New Delhi (155), Chennai (177), Bengaluru (178) and Hyderabad (192).
- Pune (201) and Kolkata (203) are the least expensive Indian cities in the ranking.
Objective of Mercer’s Cost of Living index
- Mercer’s annual cost of living index aims to help companies and governments determine pay packages for expatriate employees by measuring accommodation costs and the price of goods and services within local markets against their relative cost in New York City.
