PM Modi designates new Parliament building as Parliament House of India

  • The new Parliament building has been designated with the name the “Parliament House of India”.
  • The old parliament building will now be called “Samvidhan Sadan (Constitution House)”.
  • This new Parliament Building of India was inaugurated on May 27, 2023, however the official business of the building began on September 19, 2023 during the Parliament Special Session.
  • The new Parliament building has been designed by renowned architect Bimal Patel. 
  • The Gujarat-based Bimal Patel is also behind designing of Kashi Vishwanath corridor and the first of its kind Sabarmati Riverfront project.
  • The iconic old building was designed by British architects Sir Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker. It was completed in 1927 means 96 years ago. This historic structure will now be conserved as an archaeological asset of the country.
  • Features of New Parliament Building
    • Built at a cost of 971 crore, as a part of India’s Central Vista Redevelopment Project.
    • The built-up area is approximately 65,000 square meters.
    • Triangular shape
    • Seating capacity of 888, compared to 543 seats in old building.
    • Rajya Sabha hall has seating capacity of up to 384 members. The Lok Sabha may accommodate up to 1,272 seats.
    • Lok Sabha hall is designed around the peacock theme (India’s national bird).
    • Rajya Sabha hall features the lotus theme (India’s national flower).
    • Features a ‘Constitutional Hall’ in the centre
    • Each seats of the MPs will be equipped with multimedia display
