PM Modi launches Rs 13,000 Crores PM Vishwakarma Scheme at New Delhi

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi officially launched the Central Sector Scheme “Pradhan Mantri (PM) Vishwakarma” on September 17, 2023 at New Delhi, on the occasion of Vishwakarma Jayanti.
  • The scheme aims to provide government support to traditional artisans & craftsmen (or ‘Vishwakarmas’) in all sectors, especially in fisheries sector, to grow their business. 
  • The total outlay of the scheme is Rs 13,000 Crores.
  • Under this scheme, workers will be provided a
    • toolkit incentive of ₹15,000,
    • collateral-free credit support up to ₹1 lakh (first tranche) and ₹2 lakh (second tranche) at a concessional interest rate of 5%,
    • incentive for digital transactions and marketing support.
  • The beneficiaries will get recognition through a PM Vishwakarma certificate and ID card
  • This will help to help enhance the skills of workers and help them avail loans easily to empower them financially.
  • Initially, 18 traditional trades will be covered. These include
    1. carpenter (Suthar);
    2. boat maker;
    3. armourer;
    4. blacksmith;
    5. hammer and tool kit maker;
    6. locksmith;
    7. goldsmith;
    8. potter (Kumhaar);
    9. sculptor, stone breaker;
    10. cobbler;
    11. mason;
    12. basket/mat/broom maker/coir weaver;
    13. doll and toy maker (traditional);
    14. barber;
    15. garland maker;
    16. washerman;
    17. tailor ; and
    18. fishing net maker.
