Indian Railways to bring 2,000 km of network under ‘KAVACH’ in 2022-23 for safety and capacity augmentation
- The Indian Railways has planned to deploy its indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, ‘Kavach’, in phased manner across all the network.
- To begin with and as a part of Atmanirbhar Bharat, the system will be rolled out across 2,000 km of network in the 2022-23 fiscal.
- Subsequently, 4,000 to 5,000 km of network will be covered every year, bringing around 34,000 Kms of network under Kavach.
- KAVACH is a state of the art electronic system meant to provide protection by preventing trains to pass the signal at Danger (Red) and avoid collision. This will boost safety in train operation.
- The system has been developed by Lucknow-based Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) in collaboration with Indian industry. The trials were facilitated by South Central Railway.
- Inspection of the successful trial of ‘Kavach’ working system was done by Union Minister of Railways Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw on March 04, 2022, between Gullaguda-Chitgidda Railway stations on Lingampalli-Vikarabad section in Secunderabad Division of South Central Railway.
- Advantages of ‘Kavach’ Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system
- Cheapest system
- Comes with Safety Integrity Level 4 (SIL-4) certified technologies
- Probability of error is 1 in 10,000 years
- Will open avenues of export of this indigenous technology for Railways
