Luis Caffarelli is the winner of the 2023 Abel prize, unofficially called the Nobel prize for mathematics.
Mr Caffarelli has won the prestigious award for his work on partial differential equations (PDA), a class of equations that describe many real-world physical systems, from melting ice to jet engines.
He is the first ever winner of Abel Prize from South Africa.
Luis Caffarelli is currently a professor at the University of Texas at Austin.

The Abel prize is an annual award given by the by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters for outstanding scientific work in the field of mathematics.
It comes with a cash award of 7.5 million Norwegian kroner
