Prime Minister Narendra Modi conferred with France’s Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour

  • The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, is in France for a two-day official visit, from July 13 and 14, 2023.
  • PM Modi was conferred with the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, France’s highest military or civilian award on July 13, by President of the Republic of France, Mr. Emmanuel Macron.
  • Although the membership to the award is restricted to French nationals, the foreign nationals who serve France or uphold its ideals may also be given a distinction of the Legion.
  • Other foreign personalities to receive this honour include former South African President Nelson Mandela, King Charles – the then Prince of Wales, Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Former United Nations Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
  • During his visit, PM Modi also attended the French National Day (also known as Bastille Day) celebrations as the Guest of Honour on July 14, 2023.
  • From Paris, PM Modi will travel to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, for an Official Visit on July 15, 2023.
