IIT Madras Tops Atal Rankings (ARIIA) 2021 for third straight year

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras has retained the top position in the ‘Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements,’ (ARIIA) 2021 for being the best centrally funded institution in India.
  • The premier institute has topped in the list of top centrally funded innovative educational institutes in India for the third consecutive year.
    • IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IT Kanpur, and IIT Roorkee are the among the top five centrally funded institutions in the list respectively.
  • The 2021 ‘Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) was released by Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar on December 29, 2021. 

ARIIA 2021

  • ARIIA 2021 ranking is the third edition of the annual ranking.
  • Total of 1,438 higher education institutions (HEIs) including all IITs, NITs, and IISc participated in 2021 rankings compared to 674 HEIs in 2020.
  • ARIIA 2021 is dominated by the IITs, with 7 IITs on top-10 list in the centrally funded institution category.
  • For the first time, ARIIA 2021 ranking has introduced a “non-technical institutions” category.
    • This category has been topped by Indira Gandhi National Open University (Delhi) followed by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Kozhikode.
  • Award categories and top winner:
    • Institute of National Importance & Central Universities/CFTIs (Technical) – IIT Madras
    • University & Deemed to be University (Govt. & Govt. Aided) (Technical) – Panjab University
    • University & Deemed to be University (Private/Self Financed) (Technical) – Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology Khordha ,Odisha
    • Colleges/Institutes (Govt. & Govt. Aided) (Technical) – College of Engineering, Pune
    • Colleges/Institutes (Private / Self Financed) (Technical) – G H Raisoni College of Engineering, Nagpur
    • CFIs (Non-Technical) and General (Non-Technical) – Indira Gandhi National Open University,Delhi
  • Parameters: 2021 ranking is based upon evaluation on nine parameters which includes:
    1. Developing an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset
    2. Teaching and learning
    3. Dedicated infrastructure and facilities
    4. Generation of innovations/ ideas and recognition received
    5. Ventures established and recognitions received.
    6. Angel and VC fund/investment mobilized 
    7. Intellectual Property (IP), generation and commercialization
    8. annual budget and funding support
    9. Participation in the innovation and entrepreneurship initiative of Ministry of Education.

About ARIIA

  • The ARIIA ranking was launched in 2019 by the Innovation Cell of the Ministry of Education.
  • ARIIA is a joint initiative of the Education Ministry and AICTE.
  • The objective of ARIIA is to systematically rank higher education institutions and universities in India as per Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Startup, and Development amongst faculty and students.
